Markham remembers how fastidious his Dad was with his cars – a Charger RT and 264GL Volvo.
As a kid he loved nothing more than weekend drives with his Dad to go waterskiing on the Hawkesbury River.
Aged 11, his prized possession was a poster of his dream car, a Porsche 911, but Markham’s natural sporting ability delayed his career in the motor trade – he was a professional golfer for three years and played 1st grade cricket for Balmain for more than a decade. Markham’s stellar career in cars began in his mid-20s, working with both manufacturers and dealerships for nearly 30 years.
He got his dream car – in fact Markham regularly updates his beloved Porsches – and now he’s joined Motor HQ to help people take the nightmare out of selling their own cars.
“Some of the stories I hear from people who’ve been trying to sell their cars privately are genuine horror yarns and it doesn’t need to be like that,” says Markham. “I definitely think Motor HQ offers a great alternative for private sellers that is safe, fast and a viable alternative to dealing wth the general public. We give private sellers confidence and assurance – as well as a guaranteed payout.”
Markham remains an avid golfer and it’s likely you’ll run into him on any given weekend at Cromer Golf Club, where he’s a member.
“I love the social side of playing golf and have done ever since my Pro-Am days,” he says. “There aren’t many sports where all levels can play together and that’s the beauty of golf – it doesn’t matter whether you’re a great golfer or a beginner, everyone can play together.”
Markham is also a member of the Sydney Cricket Ground, another place you’re likely to run into him during Test, Sheffield Shield and Big Bash matches, which also offer a great opportunity for him to catch up with his old Balmain team mates.
Sport will forever be in Markham’s DNA, but these days he loves nothing more than spending time with his two teenage daughters – and taking them for drives, in his Porsche of course.
